Fuhlrott Ancestors, Leinefelde, and Eichsfeld

Most of the Fuhlrott ancestors had been born in Leinefelde, had married there, and had died there. Nearly every person with surname Fuhlrott – living in the world nowadays – might be related to nearly every person living there. Where is this place, and what is Leinefelde?	Die meisten Vorfahren der Fuhlrott wurden in Leinefelde geboren, haben dort geheiratet und sind da gestorben. So dürfte wohl auch jeder heute lebende Fuhlrott mit fast jedem Einheimischen dort mehrmals verwandt sein. Wo liegt und was ist dieses Leinefelde?
Leinefelde (not to be confused with Leinfelden in southern Germany!) is located in the upper (i.e. southern) part of the Eichsfeld, a bleak and barren mountainous landscape in the west of Thuringia, in the center of Germany. It is headwaters for the Leine, Unstrut, Wipper, and several smaller rivers. The Eichsfeld as a whole forms kind of a tableland south of the Harz (the highest mountains of northern and middle Germany), and contains the geographical center of Germany. From 1949 to 1990, it had been the most western part of the former GDR (communist governed East Germany), as a bulge into the old Federal Republic of Germany, towards Lower Saxony/Hessia.    As part of the diocese of the (far away) archbishop of Mainz since the medieval ages, it had withstood the protestant reformation surrounding it, as a catholic stronghold.	Leinefelde (nicht zu verwechseln mit dem süddeutschen Leinfelden!) liegt im oberen (dem südlicheren) Eichsfeld, einer rauen und kargen Berglandschaft im Westen Thüringens, in der Mitte Deutschlands. Es ist Quellgebiet für Leine, Unstrut, Wipper und zahlreiche kleinere Flüsse. Das Eichsfeld insgesamt bildet eine Art Plateau südlich des Harz, und enthält die geografische Mitte Deutschlands. Von 1949 bis 1990 war es die westlichste Ausbuchtung der früheren DDR in die alte Bundesrepublik, nach Niedersachsen/Hessen hin.    Seit dem Mittelalter Bestandteil der Diözese des (weit entfernten) Erzbischofs von Mainz, widerstand es der ringsum sich ausbreitenden Reformation als katholische Wagenburg.
Leinefelde	Leinefelde
Already in the medieval ages, the village Leinefelde had been known. Its name stems from the river Leine, which rises nearby. In 1820, it had 574 inhabitants, and in 1840: 823 inhabitants and 116 houses. 98% of the inhabitants were Roman catholics at that time.    At the end of the 19th century, it still was a village. Nowadays, Leinefelde is a town (since 1969) with (in 2003) 14 061 inhabitants. Facing it – in the south-west direction – one can find the castle Scharfenstein, and the northern end of the large national park Eichsfeld, which, south of the line Eschwege - Mühlhausen/Unstrut, turns into the national park Hainich-Werratal.    Since 16. March 2004, Leinefelde is unified with its neighbour town Worbis and the communities of Breitenbach and Wintzingerode, forming the new town Leinefelde-Worbis with 20 570 inhabitants (as of mid 2006).  All this is theory, adopted from the literature. I have not yet been there by myself!         O.F.	Das Örtchen Leinefelde bestand schon im Mittelalter. Der Name bezieht sich auf die Leine, die in der Nähe entpringt. Es hatte 1820 574 Einwohner, und 1840 823 Einwohner und 116 Wohnhäuser. Es war zu 98% katholisch.1    War es auch zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts noch ein Dorf2, so ist Leinefelde heute (seit 1969) eine Stadt mit (Ende 2003) 14 061 Einwohnern. Südwestlich gegenüber liegt Burg Scharfenstein und der Beginn des großen Naturparks Eichsfeld, der südlich der Linie Eschwege - Mühlhausen/Unstrut in den Naturpark Hainich-Werratal übergeht.    Seit dem 16. März 2004 ist Leinefelde mit der Nachbarstadt Worbis und den Gemeinden Breitenbach und Wintzingerode zur neuen Stadt Leinefelde-Worbis mit 20 570 Einwohnern (Mitte 2006) zusammengelegt. 1)    Nach Angaben aus: Kabisch, K.
